Biography
Max Tulysewski is an Australian musician, composer, producer and teacher. He was born in August ‘94, took up drumming at age 7, started playing professionally in his early teens and entered his 20’s as one of South Australia’s busiest and most in-demand musicians.
Max’s stint as the drummer for indie rock act Donnarumma saw them win the APRA AMCOS Emily Burrows Award in 2017, tour nationally and support acts such as Cold Chisel, Dan Sultan, The Black Sorrows, Regurgitator and The Teskey Brothers. Live session work with electronic pop artist MANE in 2019 included an appearance at the Darwin Festival and a run of shows in New Zealand opening for Matt Corby. Performances with new wave act Street Legal have included support slots for Ash (UK), Sparta (US), The Models, Magic Dirt and The Living End.
Max has also spent considerable time touring regionally and performing at Australian festivals such as the Illawarra Folk Festival and WOMADelaide with folk rock act Bearded Gypsy Band (whilst still in high school) as well as the Dorrigo Folk & Bluegrass Festival, Groundwater Country Music Festival and Tamworth Country Music Festival with country artists The Heggarties and Matt Ward and the Rising Sons. Performances with experimental/jazz fusion project The Cortex Shift have included support slots for Johannes S. Sistermanns (DE) at COMA and Stereolab (UK) at RCC 2020.
In 2015, Max founded the emo/pop-punk group Superdose Gangway, a band which he fronts on vocals and keyboard. The group is known for intense live shows and unorthodox releases, such as their first project ‘26 Songs in 2016’ and their 4-way split 7” vinyl with fellow emo bands from the US, UK and Italy. Superdose Gangway has shared the stage with Tigers Jaw (US), Signals Midwest (US), The 5.6.7.8’s (JPN), Carb on Carb (NZ), The Smith Street Band, Ceres, Press Club and Slowly Slowly. In 2023, their single Ceramic was featured on the soundtrack for the indie feature film Emotion is Dead which premiered to a sold out theatre for the ADL Film Festival.
In 2023, Max was nominated for a Telstra ARIA Music Teacher Award for his work as the director of the Heathfield Renegades, a semi-professional marching drum corps comprised of students at Heathfield High School. Since its formation by Daniel Seymour in 2009, the drumline has led Port Adelaide FC’s ‘March from the Mall’ prior to each home game in the 2014 & 2015 AFL seasons, featured in a Jimmy Barnes film clip (Largs Pier Hotel), performed annually in the Credit Union and National Pharmacies Christmas Pageants, featured in the WOMADelaide Parade and played in front of an audience of 30,000 at the Elder Park Carols by Candlelight.
Beyond his bandleading, collaborations and discography, Max was also named one of Australia’s Top 10 Up & Coming Drummers Under 16 by Drumscene Magazine in 2011 and received his Bachelor of Music from the Elder Conservatorium of Music in 2019. Max proudly endorses Metro Drum Co. and voluntarily supports Cymbalutopia.
